The Navajo wedding basket was both ceremonial and functional – the design can vary but generally contains the hallmark elements of: earth, sun, mountains and pathway; the motif a guiding story for the new couple as they begin their life together. The design can be thought of as a map – and while interpretations vary, the imagery generally includes a darker center circle that represents the Beginning of Time. The center is where the spirit of the basket is strongest. Surrounding the center is a lighter field representing the Earth and the couple’s community. Beyond this are depictions of sacred mountains and the life giving sun’s red rays. An open pathway from the center out is said to represent the couple’s pathway forward and that challenges faced can be solved by the strength of being together.Wood artist Keoni Carlson carved this interpretation from his Colorado studio in 2017.
