Among the most difficult of the artist’s work, “Burden Baskets” are often carved inside as well as outside – with accents of thorn or turquoise. Southwestern tribal tradition holds guests to a home were asked to, “…take off any burdens or troubling thoughts…” and put such cares inside the basket before entering. The home was to be a place of peace and calm and caring – “burdens” left at the door.
